Thomas Seaman was born and raised on the south side of Chicago where he acquired an appreciation for both Chicago’s world famous architecture and the inner city longing for escape and natural beauty. His father was a professional artist who studied and exhibited at the prestigious Art Institute of Chicago, which remains Tom’s favorite attraction in that city.
Tom attended the University of Illinois – Urbana, where he was an Edmund J. James scholar in research Psychology. He entered a PhD program in research Psychology at the University of Missouri-Columbia where he was awarded a United States Public Health Service Fellowship and conducted innovative experiments on verbal learning and memory. After completing his Masters degree, Tom decided to pursue a business career which led to several management positions in Information Technology and Manufacturing.
Tom started painting in watercolor about 20 years ago but quickly switched to acrylic paint because he felt it offered greater control. He is largely self-taught although he learned basic painting technique from Jerry Yarnell videos.
His subjects vary widely and include landscapes, cityscapes, seascapes, wildlife, Hot Springs attractions, figures and portraits. But as one observer noted, “He likes things with water.” His paintings evoke a range of moods from peaceful tranquility to bustling excitement. Tom believes that his greatest asset as an artist is his sensitivity to the human condition and our need for beauty and understanding.
Tom and his wife Sara moved to Hot Springs in 2009. They have two sons and four grandsons and a granddaughter. Tom and Sara enjoy the beauty of the Hot Springs landscape and the many recreational and cultural attractions.
When he’s not painting, Tom enjoys fly tying and fishing, music, literature and Chicago sports (though not always enjoyable). He also enjoys teaching and has taught psychology, statistics, manufacturing systems, project management, fly tying and fly fishing. He recently taught psychology and statistics at National Park College in Hot Springs.
