Tony Tabone's Art & Bio
![]() Tony Tabone grew up in Tupelo, Mississippi where he graduated with honors in Art from Tupelo High School. He moved to Arkansas in 1998, and has been here ever since.
His love for nature and the outdoors is deeply ingrained in his character and finds expression in his work. While he enjoys working with various mediums such as oils, acrylics, pastels, & pen and ink, his true love is Scratchboard. He was introduced to it his last year of high school and has worked extensively in it for over 20 years now. Scratchboard is a 2-dimensional subtractive art form. The medium typically consists of a white kaolin clay coated hardboard, covered with black India ink. Sharp tools are used to remove, or “scratch”, through the black ink, revealing the white clay underneath. Tony uses various Exacto blades, along with sewing needles to scratch into the clay, creating work with various textures and contours that create exceptional detail and realism. After the scratching is completed, he adds color to the scratches using watercolors and inks. After the color dries, additional scratching creates highlights. Color can be added to the highlights, and so on, until the piece is complete. A tedious yet gratifying process. Due to the depth of detail Tony can achieve through Scratchboard, he works almost exclusively in the medium. He hopes that, through his art, he can inspire others to have a deep appreciation for nature and the outdoors as he does.
